There are no formal qualifications necessary to be a professional genealogist. What is essential is a sound knowledge of social and local history sources, paleography and some Latin.

The Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives (AGRA) was founded to maintain professional standards within the sphere of genealogy, heraldry and record searching. Membership is available to well-qualified professional researchers who have been engaged as genealogists or record agents for a number of years.

The Society of Genealogists runs a variety of courses on genealogy and local history.

The most august body of genealogists, the College of Arms is the official repository of the Coats of Arms and pedigrees of English, Welsh, Northern Irish and Commonwealth families and their descendants. The officers of the College, known as Heralds, specialize in genealogical and heraldic work for their clients.
